Suspected arsonists have launched an attack on the residence of Pascal Agbordike, a prominent lawmaker representing the Ihiala federal constituency of Anambra State.

The attack occurred around 1 a.m. on Tuesday in Ubahi-Mbosi, a community situated in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

Reports indicate that the assailants, believed to be hoodlums, fired gunshots indiscriminately for several minutes before setting fire to the house during the assault. Although no casualties were reported, Agbordike’s residence, a well-appointed six-bedroom duplex, was reduced to ashes by the inferno.

Pascal Agbordike, who emerged victorious in the 2023 general election as the representative for Ihiala Federal Constituency, had previously held the position of deputy speaker in the Anambra State House of Assembly. A member of the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Agbordike has called for a thorough investigation by law enforcement and security agencies to uncover the individuals responsible for the attack.

Speaking on the incident, Agbordike lamented, “I am currently homeless, as my building was completely razed in the village and nothing was salvaged. I received a call around 1 a.m. this morning, informing me that my house was under attack by hoodlums. They infiltrated the compound, setting everything ablaze while firing shots sporadically. I have lost everything in that house, including all my documents.”

The property, originally a bungalow, boasted five bedrooms and four living rooms. Anambra’s police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and revealed that the police force has launched an immediate investigation into the attack.

Anambra State, like many areas in Nigeria’s south-east, has witnessed a surge in security challenges, with frequent armed assaults on various targets, including government officials, security agencies, and government facilities. In the past year, numerous government officials, as well as members of Nigerian security agencies, have fallen victim to such attacks in the state.
