*Says Nigerian Politicians Are Murdering The Tenets Of Democracy
*Calls For Genuine Democracy And Accountable Governance

In commemoration of Democracy Day, J.S. Okutepa SAN expressed his concerns over the state of democracy in Nigeria, accusing politicians of gradually killing the essence of democratic governance.

In a statement, he reflected on the significance of June 12, 1993, as the most credible and freest presidential election in Nigeria’s history, which was unfortunately annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

While acknowledging the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day by President Muhammadu Buhari and the associated public holidays, Okutepa raised critical questions about the current state of Nigerian democracy. He lamented that the democratic experiment since the annulment of the June 12 elections has deteriorated, with politicians disregarding the fundamental principles of democracy and resorting to undemocratic practices.

According to Okutepa, many politicians in positions of power have become democratic despots or outright terrorists, manipulating the will of the people and subjecting Nigerians to political slavery. He expressed concern over the contamination of democracy by corruption and terrorism, emphasizing the lack of internal democracy within political parties and the prevalence of political impositions.

The statement reads in part;
” For me and many Nigerians the democratic experiment since June 12 annulment has been from bad to worst. Truth be told many of our politicians and political actors parading in the corridors of powers since June 12 annulment are either democratic despots or outright democratic terrorists who have terrorized Nigerians and Nigerian society into political slavery and political submissions based on their whims and caprices. For me and many well meaning Nigerians politicians have thrown the basic tenets of democracy overboard in Nigeria and have embraced money bags democratic tyranny and coercion to the detriment of sovereignty of the people. Political hygiene is polluted and corruption Nigeria PlC have all replaced the much cherished democratic values where the will of the people is the most significant indices of good democracy.”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria called out the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its failure to ensure political sanity in Nigeria’s electoral processes. He criticized the compromised state of INEC and the widespread disregard for due process and democratic rules, stating that what exists in Nigeria today is a mere civilian militarized government.
As Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, Okutepa appealed to politicians to embrace a new approach, urging them to respect the sovereignty of the people and allow true democracy to prevail. He emphasized that genuine democracy is essential for good governance and a government accountable to the people. Okutepa implored politicians to recognize the truth and work towards healing the wounds of the nation’s conscience.

While Democracy Day is meant to celebrate the ideals of democracy, Okutepa’s remarks highlight the urgent need for a transformation in Nigeria’s political landscape.

As the country reflects on the significance of June 12, it serves as a reminder that true democracy requires the protection of the people’s will and the promotion of democratic values throughout all levels of government.
