15 airports across the country have been renamed after former President, Muhammadu Buhari, late Obafemi Awolowo, Samuel Ladoke Akintola and twelve other prominent Nigerians.

The approval for the renaming was given by Buhari on Friday.

He explained that the renaming was in recognition of the contribution of the prominent Nigerians to the development of the nation in different sectors.

The approval is contained in a statement in Abuja by the Head of Press and Public Affairs of the Ministry of Aviation, Odutayo Oluseyi.

The affected airports are: “Port Harcourt international airport now Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo; Ibadan International airport now Samuel Ladoke Akintola; Ebonyi international airport now Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo; Maiduguri International airport now Muhammadu Buhari and Ilorin International airport now Gen. Tunde Abdulbaki Idiagbon.

Others are: “Akure International airport now Olumuyiwa Bernanrd Aliu; Benin International airport now Oba Akinzua II; Dutse International airport now Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi; Gombe International airport now Brig. Zakari Maimalari; Kaduna International airport now Gen. Hassan Usman Katsina; Makurdi international airport now Joseph Sarwuan Tarka; Minna international airport now Mallam Abunakar Imam; Nasarawa international airport now Sheikh Usam Danfodio, Osubi international airport now Alfred Diete Spiff and Yola international airport now Lamido Aliyu Mustapha.

Buhari also approved the constitution of boards for the agencies under the aviation ministry.

He explained that the boards are institutional representations.
