The management of Bingham University in Nasarawa state has dismissed claims in some quarters that Boko Haram insurgents plan to invade the institution.

On Thursday, a report had claimed the terror group wrote the institution and threatened to attack it if its demands are not met.

The report had also alleged that parents have started withdrawing their wards from the institution amid the threat.

But in a statement on Thursday, Daburi Misal, the varsity’s director of public affairs, urged the public to disregard the information.

“The attention of the management of Bingham University has been drawn to an online news report by nationwidenews.ng stating that ‘Boko Haram writes Bingham University, parents withdraw wards in panic” the statement reads.

“The write up goes on to state that Boko Haram wrote the authorities of the university, informing of an imminent attack.

“The claim is totally false as no such letter has been received by the authorities of the university.”

Misal said the university has, however, taken extra precautionary security measures in the light of information being circulated in social media.

The rumour comes a few weeks after gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents attacked Kuje prison in Abuja, and released several prisoners.

Bingham University located in Karu, 25 kilometres from the federal capital territory (FCT), was established in 2005 by the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) as a conventional varsity.

It is one of the six private universities in the north and the only one established by a Christian organisation.
