*Ambassador Urges Nigerians To Reject Vote-Buying, Violence

United States Ambassador to Nigeria Mary Beth Leonard has argued that the commitment produced by the relationship between the two countries is beyond governments.

She stated that it was equally anchored on cultural and commercial relationships, as well as in people-to-people partnerships.

The envoy highlighted the similarities between Nigeria and her country as it marked its 246th Independence Day celebration.

The U.S. celebrates its independence on July 4, yearly.

According to Leonard, both nations seek to embrace diversity, build unity and recommit to strengthening democracy.

“As the U.S. celebrates 246 years of independence this year, we take time to recognise the key pillars of democracy.

“Our thoughts turn to freedom of expression and respect for human rights, the rule of law, and the role of all citizens in determining the country’s future,” she said.

Leonard said for Americans, celebrating Independence Day usually meant reminiscing about the past and reflecting on what united them.

This, she said, includes their principles, history and shared humanity.

“The U.S. continues to strive to strengthen our own imperfect union and also seeks to support Nigeria on its path toward a more equitable future for all its citizens.

“We partner Nigeria to strengthen health services, support educational institutions, boost agricultural production, provide security training and military equipment, and encourage entrepreneurship and private sector engagement.”

On the upcoming general elections in Nigeria, Leonard urged citizens to reject vote buying and violence.

She also stressed the importance of citizens asking candidates questions about issues they cared about, adding that their voices and actions mattered.

“In the lead up to the election season, we are reminded of the importance of robust debate, freedom of expression, and space for the many diverse voices in Nigeria to be heard,” she said.

12 bodies found after floating crane sinks in south China

Twelve bodies of suspected victims were found yesterday after a floating crane sank in waters off the coast of south China’s Guangdong Province.

According to the provincial maritime search and rescue centre, the bodies were recovered in an area about 50 nautical miles southwest of the site where the floating crane sank.

The centre said the relevant departments were stepping up the identification work.

On Saturday, the floating crane of an offshore wind-farm project was found via a monitoring system to be in danger after its mooring chain broke while it was taking shelter from typhoon Chaba in waters near the city of Yangjiang.

The crane later sank, with 27 people falling into the water and going missing.

One person was rescued yesterday morning.

A total of seven planes, 246 vessels, and 498 fishing boats had been mobilised to carry out searches for the remaining missing people, targeting areas including beaches and nearshore and offshore areas.
