A human rights activist and founder, Global Centre for Defence of Human Rights (GCDHR) Lagos, Chief Frank Agbedo has proudly felicitated with the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, on behalf of all Nigerian lawyers, and especially, NBA Lagos Branch, Human Rights Committee, on the hosting of a Human Rights Summit.

TheNigerialawyer recalls that the Human Rights Committee, of the NBA Lagos, has fixed today to commemorate the 72nd celebration of the International Human Rights Day by the International Human Rights Community all over the world with the theme “Recover better: Stand up for Human rights ”

Chief Frank Agbedo, speaking with TheNigerialawyer, on how memorable 10th December, is all over the world said human rights day is observed globally every year on the 10th December which date in 1948, the United Nation General Assembly had unanimously adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, for the benefit of mankind, with these immortal openers ” Disrespect and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind”.

Responding on the theme for this year’s celebration; Frank said it could not have been more apt.

“Lawyers play a pivotal role in the defence and enforcement of human rights of citizens, in keeping with their primary duty, as priests in the temple of justice.

“The real value of human rights lies in their enforcement through the instrumentality of the law courts.

“Every lawyer called to the bar, is first and foremost, a human rights activist, by virtue of his calling. The quantum leap in volume of human litigations in Nigerian courts attests to the reality of the role of the Nigerian Lawyer in the evolution and growth of human rights.

“As an organization actively involved in the promotion, defence and enforcement of human rights and social justice under the mantra of Activism of positive Change, we are not oblivious of the challenges faced by both lawyers and Judges in accessing relevant cases of interest in the course of human rights practice,” he added.
