The Mid-West Bar Forum (MBF) has congratulated three of its members – Olumide Akpata, John Aikpokpo-Martins and Kunle Edun for emerging as the national President, 1st Vice-President and Welfare Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) respectively

The Forum congratulated the trio during its last Quarterly Meeting which held on Saturday, 5th December, 2020, at Asaba, Delta State under the Chairmanship of Chike Onyemenam, SAN.

Based on the statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer, TNL, Onyemenam, SAN proposed that concentration should now be on promoting unity and ensuring the welfare of its members

Among the programs proposed for 2021 included amendment of the Forum’s constitution to make membership open to lawyers of 10 years post-call and creation of young lawyers body within the forum

The statement reads in part, “The Forum’s Chairman, Chike Onyemenam SAN noted that the Forum which is made up of only 2 out of the 36 States of the Federation having recorded the feat of having three of its Members elected as National Officers of the N.B.A. during his first tenure as Chairman of the Forum and now recorded a greater feat of having three of its Members elected National President, 1st National Vice-President and National Welfare Officer of the N.B.A. during his second tenure as Chairman of the Forum, the Forum should now concentrate during his last year in Office on promoting and ensuring the unity and welfare of Members of the Forum; and consequently reeled out the proposed roadmap/programme of the Forum for 2021, which includes the Amendment of the Forum’s Constitution to reduce the minimum age limit of membership of the Forum from 20 years post-call to 10 years post-call and the constitution of a Young Lawyers Forum for the Forum so as to better the lot of young Lawyers within Edo and Delta States and have them prepared for future Leadership.”

Furthermore, the General Assembly granted permission to the Chairman of the Forum to suspend the sanction the forum intended to impose on Patrick Oganwu and Professor Nathaniel Inegbedion who allegedly declared themselves as interim Chairman and Chairman of the Forum respectively.

“After discussing issues of sanctions/ disciplinary measures against Members who violate or disobey the Forum’s Constitution or the Resolutions passed by the Forum, the Forum’s Chairman sought and was granted permission by the General Assembly to suspend taking any disciplinary measures against one Patrick Oganwu and Professor Nathaniel Inegbedion who recently declared themselves Interim Chairman and Chairman respectively of the Forum without the knowledge and participation of the incumbent Chairman/Executive Committee of the Forum or that of the 14 N.B.A. Branches in Edo and Delta States that make up the Forum; in deference to the incumbent President of the N.B.A. who had decided to look into the matter.” the statement further reads in part

The Meeting which was hosted by the Nigerian Bar Association(N.B.A.) Asaba Branch saw a large turn out of Branch Chairmen, past Branch Chairmen, Elders and Bar Leaders of the N.B.A. Branches in Edo and Delta States, with the distinguished National President of the N.B.A. and Member of the Mid-West Bar Forum, Olumide Akpata, Esq. ably represented at the Meeting by John Aikpokpo Martins, the 1st National Vice-President of the N.B.A. and distinguished Member of the same Forum who flew in from Abuja at the behest of the President.

The Meeting ended shortly after lavish entertainment of Members by the Asaba Branch of the N.B.A. to enable Members to travel back to their respective bases in Edo and Delta States.
