Miss Chinenye Igwetu at Monday's sitting of the Independent Investigative Panel on SARS and other Police Units set up by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) independent investigative panel probing allegations of brutality against the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has summoned the Registrar, Medical and Dental Practitioners Council and Chief Medical Director (CMD), Garki General Hospital, Abuja, to appear before it on 2nd day of December, 2020.

This summon is pursuant to a petition filed by a lady, Chinenye Igwetu who alleged that her younger sister was unlawfully killed by one Inspector Benjamin Peters.

She alleged that her younger sister, Linda Igwetu who was then a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member on 3rd day of July, 2018, in Abuja, a day before her passing out was brutally killed by Inspector Benjamin, as disclosed on November, 4 before the panel sitting at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Maitama, Abuja.

It was added that her sister was allegedly killed at Ceddi Plaza in Abuja when she and her friends were returning from where they went to celebrate her passing out and died at Garki General Hospital.

Meanwhile, Igwetu listed Inspector Peters, the FCT Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police as respondents in the petition.

When the petition came up for hearing on Monday before the panel, counsel for the respondents, James Idachaba, told the panel that the police were only served the proceedings of November 4 (last Friday).

Therefore, he stated that an adjournment is needed in order to get Inspector Benjamin appear before the panel, adding that the Police is ready to cooperate with the panel in the circumstances to achieve justice.

However, China Obiagwu SAN, who appeared for the petitioner, asked the panel to summon the CMD, Garki General Hospital, Abuja and Registrar of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council to appear before it to give evidence in the matter.

Therefore, the panel chairman, Hon. Justice Suleiman Galadima (retired) ordered that summons be served on both the CMD and the Registrar for them to appear before the panel on the next adjourned date, Wednesday, 2nd December, 2020.
