First Bank of Nigeria Limited has written a letter to the Chairman, NBA Section on Legal Practice stating that it did not intend to breach the Rules of Professional Conduct by virtue of one of its advert, which necessitated the NBA to write the Bank.

This reply is contained in a letter dated 5th day of July, 2020 signed by Raymond Mgbeokwere, General Counsel of the Bank which was made available to TheNigeriaLawyer, with the subject “RE: INFRINGEMENT OF THE LEGAL PRACTITIONERS’ ACT BY FIRST BANK: CEASE AND DESIST NOTICE”

“We refer to your letter of July 3, 2020 on the above subject, thank you for the contents thereof and write to describe the said publication as most unfortunate and therefore regrettable.”

Beside, the Bank noted that it is committed to working with all professional bodies in Nigeria.

“FirstBank remains a Nigerian iconic bank with a heritage of good corporate citizenship and respect for the extant laws of its operating environment in the past over 126years with a resolve not to drift from this corporate stance.

“FirstBank respects the Nigerian Bar Association and all other professional bodies in Nigeria and encourages its employees to register and participate in the activities of these bodies.”

Meanwhile, the Bank noted that it does not offer any professional legal services to the public by virtue of her advert which has been withdrawn.

“Neither First Bank nor its in-house Counsel offer legal services to the public.

“Please note that First Bank did not intend to breach the Rules Of Professional Conduct and that was not the intention of the advert.

“First Bank has since withdraw the advertising material from the Agency and assured you there will be no reoccurrence of this error.”

“On the part of the lawyers in the employment of First Bank, we assure you that First Bank will not, under any circumstances, breach the ethics, rules and laws that guide their profession.”
