*Says “Nigeria Must Align Arbitration Framework With Global Best Practices While Preserving Local Context”

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Ikechukwu Onuoma has said the global arbitration landscape is entering a period of significant transformation, with artificial intelligence, geopolitical shifts, diversity and demands for greater efficiency increasingly influencing the way international disputes are managed.
Onuoma made the observations while reflecting on discussions at the recent London Court of International Arbitration Conference in London, where practitioners and stakeholders examined emerging developments affecting international dispute resolution.
According to him, the discussions demonstrated that arbitration is moving beyond its traditional role of resolving commercial disputes and is increasingly required to anticipate technological, geopolitical and commercial changes capable of reshaping international business relationships.
He said one of the major issues confronting the arbitration community is the responsible and ethical deployment of artificial intelligence in arbitral proceedings, alongside increasing expectations for greater diversity, transparency and efficiency.
“The arbitration ecosystem is no longer just about resolving disputes — it is about anticipating the shifting geopolitical and technological currents that redefine commerce,” Onuoma said.
He noted that rapidly changing expectations among users of arbitration institutions meant practitioners and institutions must remain adaptable if they are to preserve confidence and institutional trust.
Onuoma said the conversations at the LCIA conference were particularly relevant to Africa and Nigeria, where efforts are continuing to strengthen domestic arbitration frameworks and develop regional dispute-resolution centres capable of handling complex commercial disputes.
He argued that Nigeria’s arbitration ecosystem must remain connected to global developments while ensuring that international standards are adapted to local realities.
“For the African arbitration ecosystem, and Nigeria in particular, these global conversations are deeply relevant,” he said.
“As we advance domestic frameworks and strengthen regional hubs, aligning with international best practices while preserving local context is essential.”
Onuoma maintained that the next generation of successful arbitration practitioners would be those capable of operating effectively across both international and domestic environments, combining an understanding of global standards with sensitivity to local commercial and legal circumstances.
“The future belongs to practitioners who can seamlessly bridge these worlds,” he said.
He also commended the LCIA for providing what he described as a forward-looking platform for discussions on the future of arbitration and international dispute resolution.
