The ongoing e-Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) is witnessing a robust discussion with lucid engagement from stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the first plenary session of the e-Conference on the topic “Disrupting The Status Quo: Charting The Path For An Alliance” was moderated by Mr. Asue Ighodalo, Founding Partner of Banwo & Ighodalo set the tone for a panelist discussion.

In addition, the discussants in the session are Arc. Olamilekan Adegbite, Honourable Minister of Mines and Steel Development; Kingsley Amaku, Head of Sanctions, NFIU; Ngover Ihyembe-Nwankwo, Head of Client Coverage, Rand Merchant Bank of Nigeria & Chairperson WIMBIZ Executive Council; and Oyeyimika Adeboye, MD, Cadbury Nigeria Plc.

Besides, Mr. Ighodalo noted that the panelist discussion is to set a tone for the year’s conference. Meanwhile, while responding to whether the country has put in place appropriate policy in the face of the changing world, the Hon. Minister noted that the pandemic has “brought to fore some of the underlining challenges we’ve had” and that, the Government is striving to navigate through the trying times.

Also, he noted that the Government is earmarking a lot of funds with the hope of cushioning the effect of the pandemic through a series of interventions programme. He also noted that Federal Government is set to eject about 2. 3 trillion naira which was just approved by the President. Also, he said part of the efforts of Government in this trying time is the scheme to employ 1,000 people per the 774 Local Government areas in Nigeria. Besides, he said that the import substitution occasioned by the pandemic means “eat what you grow and grow what you eat”. He further noted that Government is partnering with the private sector so that everyone is carried along, alluding to the Ajaokuta Company project amongst others.

In addition, Ngover Ihyembe-Nwankwo noted that there is a need to have an enabling environment for foreign direct investment (FDI) and essentially, the right security framework, as is key to a development growth in attracting investors.

Kingsley Amaku stated that there is a need for a proper regulatory framework and structures. Also, he said that it is high time private sector stopped asking Government to do this or that but a need for collaborative governance effort driven by strategic engagement with Government. Oyeyimika Adeboye equally stressed the need for collaboration but noted that it is the responsibility of Government to lead the process.

Furthermore, while speaking on what can be done in the alliance between Government and private sector in the financial services sector, Kingsley noted that the approach of private sector is that of a “public shy” approach and does not comfort the Government. Hence, he said “the strategy must be broad-based, open and data driven”. Besides, while responding to who is meant to lead the collaboration process, Ngover Ihyembe-Nwankwo stated that “government should lead as a determinant path for growth” and said we need an inclusive and sustainable growth system. The session concluded while Mr. Ighodalo noted that there is a need to be a bridge building alliance between the Government and private sector.
