A Lagos based lawyer, Ehiwe O. Sam, has rallied over 200 young lawyers to endorse the candidacy of Olumide Akpata for the position of President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in the forthcoming NBA elections.

According to him, the NBA national election is fast approaching and as expected, aspirants have set out what they intend to do for the Bar. A great many lawyers are currently in a ‘yellow wood’ where two roads diverge. And it is now glaring that they cannot travel both and be one traveller.

The need to have a progressive leadership in the Bar cannot be overemphasized. At a time like this, the Bar needs a leader that is visionary, passionate, altruistic, and in tune with the modern realities of the practice of law. The Bar needs a leader whose antecedents and obvious competence speaks for him. The Bar needs a leader who can bridge the gap between the young and older lawyers, a leader who understands the reforms that are most needed at a time like this. The Bar needs a leader that can be a voice for the Bar, a leader whose passion resonates and whose desire to become President is altruistic.

It is true that “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader’’. Olumide Akpata’s actions have always inspired Nigerian lawyers and his desire to see others grow is unparalleled. His penchant for supporting the Bar and members of the Bar is not in doubt.

Aside being a seasoned lawyer who is perfectly qualified for the position, Olumide Akpata has an impeccable track record of excellent leadership and tremendous contributions to the Bar. When he served as the Chairman of the NBA – Section on Business Law (SBL) 2016/2018 Council, he ensured that hundreds of lawyers (both young and old) across Nigeria benefitted from the SBL through massive  sponsorships which covered conference fees, accommodation and transportation during the SBL conferences; a trend that has continued even after leaving office. Let it be known that his contributions to the Bar did not start and end with his works as Chairman of the SBL. He has been consistently involved in building the Bar both from behind the scenes and at the forefront.

In view of the unimpeachable track record of Mr Olumide Akpata, many young lawyers who share the same passion to see a better Bar, have rallied round together to endorse the candidacy of Mr Olumide Akpata. Speaking with one of the young lawyers, Mr Jefferson Isiakpebogie, a lawyer practicing in Kano, he asserts that his support for Akpata is unflinching and for that reason, he is rallying together about 40 young progressive lawyers for Akpata’s candidacy. Another young lawyer practicing in Lagos, Mr Anthony Obioma has also, together with his followers, pledged their unflinching support for the candidacy of Mr Akpata. Speaking with another young lawyer, Mr Ifemede Akinmade who has already rallied round about 32 young lawyers for Akpata, he said ‘Mr Olumide Akpata stands out not just in stature but in his hands-on and practical approach to things, his genuine and enduring concern for every lawyer, young and old, even law students. His wealth of experience and track record of excellence’.

The support has been overwhelming and massive across board. According to another young lawyer, Abia Friday (Co-founder at Legal Dilemmas), who is in the course of rallying the support of 50 other young lawyers for the candidacy of Akpata, ‘I see Akpata as a leader who has a penchant for innovations and reforms, two very important things that the Bar needs at a time like this. As a senior partner, at Templars together with his team, they were able create a non-toxic atmosphere where young lawyers are treated with respect and allowed to grow in the practice. His passion to serve the Bar with utmost commitment was also seen at his recent interview with the PALMS where he stated that he would be ready and willing to embark on a sabbatical leave from his firm to enable him give full attention to the activities of the Bar if elected President of the Bar. His desire to ensure that the NBA assists young lawyers who may want to set up their law firms with soft loans is also another proof of his desire to see the growth of young lawyers’’.

In a similar vein, discussing the course with another young lawyer, Oluwatayo Osodein who is rallying together over 80 young lawyers committed to the course of the Olumide Akpata candidacy, he stated that he believes Akpata has a clearly set out vision for the Nigerian Bar. He believes that with Olumide Akpata, there will be a reform that will bring about global best practice in the practice of law in Nigeria.

We endorse the candidacy of Olumide Akpata for President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
