I read with great excitement the news that Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is set to partner with law pavilion in a bid to make research facilities more accessible to young lawyers as a way of offsetting the limitation imposed by the current pandemic.

The NBA president also disclosed that this provision would serve as a palliative to young lawyers between the post-call age of one to seven years who have paid their Bar Practicing Fee (BPF) as on the 31st day of March 2020. To me this welfare package will be impactful, long-lasting, and enduring.

It is interesting to note that over 20,000 authorities of both Supreme Court and Court of Appeal starting from 1960 till date with automatic updates; 61 years consolidated index and law digest – both the supreme court and court of appeal judgments. “Google-like” search engine for quick retrieval of authorities on issues (eResearch); Laws of the Federation, Civil Procedure Rules for the Courts and Subsidiary legislation generally. To be sincere, this is no means feat.

I agree that with this project NBA has pioneered the empowerment of young lawyers with the most essential tools of our legal trade, to wit, Precedents, Statutes, Court rules and research materials with which they can serve their clients effortlessly.

This is a cheerful and welcome development for our great Association. If you ask me I will say work in progress. As an Association, we still need to work harder and look for other ways to take care of our members’ welfare. Many young lawyers are having so many financial problems because of this pandemic. Some cannot even pay their house rents and other dues while others are detained by the police for no offence other than they are lawyers and went to police station to bail their clients. This aspect of lawyers’ welfare is very essential to our members.

We can only benefit from this NBA partnership with law pavilion if our association protects her members from police harassment, detention, and the inhuman treatment they receive from the hands of the police. There is need for the NBA leadership to also have a serious meeting with Road Safety authorities who have declared us – lawyers public enemies. I submit with respect that if the police can apologize to NMA Nigerian Medical Association why not to lawyers. We must put our house in order.

In all, I salute the NBA president and urge him to do more for the welfare of Nigerian Lawyers. It is work in progress.
