The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has today directed the immediate suspension of the NBA Kano Branch Election and that of election into office of the representative at the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Gwagwalada Branch which have both been scheduled to hold in the forthcoming Branches Elections.

These directions are contained in separate letters both dated 9th day of June, 2020 which were made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL) and signed by Mr. Jonathan Gunu Taidi, Esq., the General Secretary of the NBA which were addressed to the Election Committees Chairmen of both Branches.

Meanwhile, the suspension of the Gwagwalada Branch is consequent upon the appeal lodged by one Ignatius Obiora Agbapulu to the NBA Election Appeal Panel of the Northern Zone meant to handle appeals emanating from the decisions of the Election Committees of NBA Branches.

According to the letter:

“There is an appeal by Ignatius Obiora Agbapulu, an aspirant for National Executive Committee (NEC) Representative of Gwagwalada Branch which is pending before the Panel (Northern Zone). In view of foregoing, you are by this letter directed to suspend election in respect of the National Executive Committee (NEC) Representative only.”

However, the NBA noted that this suspension does not in any way affect the main Gwagwalada Branch Election.

“For the avoidance of doubt, you are to proceed and conduct election into various Branch Offices as there is no pending appeal in respect thereof.” The letter stated.

Furthermore, the suspension of the Kano Branch Election is due to the appeal filed by Aminu Gadanya Sani and Usman Umar Fari lodged before the NBA Election Appeal Panel of the Northern Zone.

According to the letter:

“There are appeals by: (1) Aminu Gadanya Sani and (2) Usman Umar Fari pending before the Panel (Northern Zone) and you are by this letter directed to suspend the scheduled election for Kano Branch pending the determination of the appeals under reference.”

It would be recalled that the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN had earlier on constituted the Election Appeal Panels to hear appeals arising from the decisions of the Election Committees of the various NBA Branches.
