NBA Ughelli has set up a committee to monitor the COVID 19 Lockdown in Delta State.

The Chairman of the branch Ayo-Okhiria E.S, LP, disclosed this to TheNigerialawyer, on Thursday, stating that the decision was made following the declaration of the Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa on 1st April, to put the entire Delta State on lockdown in order to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

“Whereas most of us as law-abiding citizens are obeying government’s directives, others have not complied. In effect of this have led to abuse of power by security agencies and gross violation of the rights of members of our community.

“Whereas we support the State Government intoto, we do not, however, believe that a lockdown has led to the suspension of human rights or the suspension of our courts to try offenders.

“To arrest the continuous violation of rights in our community, we have decided to set up a COVID-19 lockdown monitoring Committee,” he noted in his statement.

He further  stated that the terms of reference include:

1. Ensuring security operatives carry out their duty warmly and according to law.

2. Ensuring those flouting the lockdown directive are arrested and prosecuted.

3. Liaising with the Area Commander and DPOs in line with their terms of reference

4. Since offenders fall within “overnight cases”, ensuring the offenders are prosecuted according to law.

5. Acting as a watchdog on the Police force pursuant to my powers as a member of the Ughelli security management Committee

“Despite their terms of reference, We urge the committee to liaise and work closely with the security agencies in our three Local Governments and their Covid-19 team.

“As a body, we must ensure that the good intentions of the state government on curbing the spread of the virus in Delta State do not bear any bad fruits, particularly in respect of rights violation of members of the public.

“Finally,  we urged our members and indeed members of the public to stay safe and abide strictly by the Orders of the state government and maintain good hygiene,” he said.

Members are of the committee are:

1. Johnson Akpochafo Committee Chairman

2. M.E. Osume (alternate Chairman)

3. Pius Isioro

4. Greg Amoussou Anani

5. E. Ganagana
