The Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, has said the directive by the state Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, that residents should wear facemasks is not in conflict with the World Health Organisation’s position.

Ayade had directed that residents must wear masks before leaving their homes or risk being arrested and quarantined for 14 days as part of measures to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The commissioner said, “WHO only makes recommendations. Different states and context make decisions based on measures that can help in their context.”

The Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, Dr Mike Ryan, was quoted by the CNN as saying at a media briefing in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday that, “There is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of masks by the mass population has any potential benefit.

“In fact, there is some evidence to suggest the opposite in the misuse of wearing a mask or fitting it properly.”

Also at the briefing, an infectious disease epidemiologist with the WHO, Dr Maria Van Kherkhove, had said, “In the community, we do not recommend wearing of masks unless you yourself are sick and as a measure to prevent onward spread from you if you are ill. The masks that we recommend are for people who are at home and who are sick and for those individuals who are caring for those who are home that are sick.”
