The Chief of the Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said that women in the Nigerian Army have been deployed in combat roles.

Buratai noted that the military accorded women equal rights in the army and females must position themselves “strategically through educational empowerment.”

The army chief spoke on Thursday when he received a delegation from the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, the Federal Capital Territory Chapter who paid him a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters.

He said, “The Nigerian Army has since realised the roles of women and has placed them in their proper positions. Here in the Nigerian Army, women have participated in combat roles, show of force exercises and operations such as exercises Harbin Kunama, Hadarin Daji, Crocodile Smile and Operation Lafiya Dole.

“We accorded women equal rights in the army and so the issue of fight against inequality or the clamour for gender equality could be easily achieved through empowerment and acquisition of employment and requisite skills.

“Differences of inequality will disappear if women position themselves strategically through educational empowerment and financial empowerment.”

According to a statement by acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, the army chief reassured of the military’s resolve to continue efforts to ensuring a “secured, peaceful and prosperous country.”
