The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the death of the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Obudu Division in northern Cross River,Gabriel Amawu.

Amawu’s death was as a result of “accidental discharge” says the Police Public Relations, DSP Irene Ugbo.

Ugbo who would not speak further on the details of the incident, however, said an investigation has commenced to unravel what was responsible.

Eyewitness accounts say students of the Federal College of Education Obudu were protesting on Tuesday evening which led the police to arrest some of them. However, other students took their protest to the police station where the late Amawu was the DPO.

He was said to have shoot into the air repeatedly to disperse the protesting students before the bullet of one of the guns he held accidentally discharged and hit him.

The late DPO was a Deputy Superintendent of Police from Obudu Local Government Area where Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River hails from
