The 2019 NBA Benin Law Week came agog, when Dr. Gabriel Arishe, an erudite lecturer in Constitutional Law from the Prestigious Faculty of Law of the University of Benin stirred the hornet’s nest by dissecting the independence of the judiciary with profound simplicity and deep insights.

The lecture was discussed by a Former Federal Legislator par excellence, nicknamed ”the Cicero of the House of Representatives.”

During his stint there, the brutally blunt, but the debanoir, Dr. Ehiogie West Idahosa, Former Chairman of the Federal House Committees on Interior and Petroleum and a Member, House Committee on Legal and Judiciary, interrogated the subject, calling on Judges to rise up to the occasion in high profile matters, even if it affects Government and eschewed the seemingly disobedience of court orders and disregard for the Rule of Law by it and some of its Institutions.

The Chairman of the Session, the intrepid Alfred O. Eghobamien, SAN, asked Lawyers to be bold in the midst of malfeasance by judicial officers even in the face of threats, while asking lawyers to be professional in their approach and show, due regard to judicial officials.
Just before the end of the Session, Dr. Ehiogie West Idahosa delivered a goodwill message from the Former Governor of Edo State which was well received with a resounding ovation by members of the bar present.

The APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole MNI, OFR, who also spoke at the event, stated that the Benin Bar is an institutional partner of Government that can not be overlooked. According to him, he is proud to be associated with the NBA Benin Branch on this auspicious occasion of her 2019 Law Week celebrations.

During an Interview with the press after the Session, the Chairman of the NBA Benin Branch (The Lion Bar), Prince Collins Benson Ogiegbaen A.I.C.M.C., stated inter alia thus:

“We are well elated by the Goodwill Message from Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the APC National Chairman, a Friend of the Bar who is the Father and Architect of Modern
Day Edo State ”

The second session of day three was on Professional Ethics of Lawyers as Martins Omo Ihekpe, Esq., delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the need for lawyers to keep to the tenets of the Rules of Professional Conduct and for Lawyers to stop the unnecessary romance with judicial officers that may suggest a compromise of the judicial process.

Agbons Osawayabor Esq., gave his thoughts on the matter which was quite insightful.
Ovenseri Otamere Esq., also enjoined Lawyers to conduct themselves in a manner befitting of the revered legal profession and operate their legal practice according to its honoured tradition and norms.

Hon. Justice E. A. Edigin and Hon. Justice Efe Ikponmwoba, both gave thoughts which emphasized respect for Seniority at the Bar and for young lawyers to be patient to do their cases.
