The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Media and Public Affairs has said the lower chamber of the National Assembly is ready for legislative activities.

The committee, which briefed journalists in Abuja on Sunday, said while the lawmakers had not received their welcome package, their resumption on Tuesday is “not threatened.”
It however said offices and seats in the chamber had been allocated to members.
The 9th National Assembly, which was inaugurated on June 11, had only held one sitting – on June 13, before adjourning for two weeks – till April 2 – to allow preparation of lawmakers’ offices and welfare packages.
National Assembly are expected to get their welcome package, comprising accommodation and furniture allowances and interest-free car loans, totalling N4.68bn.
A member of the committee, Mr Bamidele Salam, said, “On the issue of our preparedness for resumption; whether the (allocation of) chamber seats are ready, from the information I have, it is ready. The Welfare Committee (which is) also handling office allocation is almost done. I think everything is set.
“On the issue of payment, we still have Monday which is a working day; anything can happen between now and then. I don’t thing that will really affect the determination of members to come in and do the job that they have to do.
“Everybody is ready to work. Those of us in different (ad hoc) committees have been working here.
“I want you to believe that the resumption on Tuesday is not threatened. The committees have substantially completed their works; that is those that have to do with putting in place the logistics that will ensure that we have a smooth resumption.”
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, is set to announce his aides this week, The PUNCH has learnt.
The aides include Special Advisers, Special Assistants and spokespersons. Gbajabiamila had, in his inaugural speech on April 11, 2019, announced the appointment of the former Speaker of Zamfara State House of Assembly, Mr Sanusi Rikiji, as his Chief of Staff.
A lawmaker close to the Speaker, in a chat with our correspondent, said the other appointments would be made when the National Assembly resumes.
The lawmakers are to resume from a two-week recess on Tuesday.
According to the source, the selection of appointees had reached an advanced stage.
The source noted that Gbajabiamila was consulting widely on the appointments to avoid a repeat of the situation with President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, who was forced to make change his position on an appointment while another aide rejected his offer.
Lawan had withdrawn the appointment of Dr Festus Adedayo as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity.
The action followed public outcry that greeted Adedayo’s appointment, barely 48 hours after the announcement.
The Special Assistant on New Media to the President of the Senate, Olu Onemola, had also resigned his appointment.
Asked when the Speaker would appoint his aides, the lawmaker said, “When we resume.”
He added, “The delay is intentional. Gbajabiamila wants to announce everything at once. Indeed, there is pressure on the Office of the Speaker, especially from those who are lobbying for positions.
“Also, he is being careful to avoid an experience similar to Lawan’s. So, he is doing some background checks.”
Gbajabiamila’s media aide could not be reached for comments as calls made to his telephone did not connect. It was learnt that he was out of the country as of Saturday.
The Deputy Speaker, Mr Idris Wase, had on Thursday appointed Dr Aminu
Malle as his Chief of Staff. He had also appointed 10 others as Special Advisers, Special Assistants and Chief Press Secretary.
