The observations by Bayo Adeyinka on the above article were brilliant. In the absence of pipe-borne water – something that I grew up experiencing as a child on my family’s return to Nigeria from Niamey, Niger Republic (our debut diplomatic mission) during General Yakubu Gowon’s era – Nigerians at home and those visiting Nigeria from Europe, the Americas and the rest of the world, have become creative artists in the face of an unrivalled absence of social responsibilities.

But let me chip in here that the increasing use of boreholes will have dire consequences for households in future and for Nigeria. Experts, and I know one such expert who is a Nigerian Professor and a top-notch engineer living in Florida, who have said Nigeria will witness a record number of landslides, building collapses (which are happening all over the place now), if the unbridled tide of boreholes is not hamstrung.

In terms of the widespread use of generators and the attendant environmental pollution, Nigeria had better reverse the incidence, before it is too late. I am astounded that in a country known for intellectual rigour and thinking, one merchant of death – according to grapevine – occupies the apex of the generator trade, who is a politician and has been impeding electrification progress.

I think that whomsoever that they are, they should be arrested, tried in a court of law (if the courts too would be honest) and be imprisoned for life. To the power or energy minister, get it right by hiring competent companies in the know-how of power supply. Your reputation and I dare say that, will be on the line if you get it wrong.
