Hassan Fagge, a magistrate, ordered that Adeyanju be kept in prison following his arraignment by the Nigeria police force. The police had charged Adeyanju with alleged murder, an allegation he was acquitted of years ago. This was after he had been granted bail on two occasions, on charges bothering on public incitement and criminal defamation. Adeyanju was first arrested on November 28 and has since then faced three separate charges, securing bail in two of those charges. The latest bothering on alleged murder was a case Mohammed Haliru, a judge of the Kano state high court, acquitted and discharged him and three others of in 2009. At the resumed hearing on Friday, Fagge said the court lacked power to hear the charges. He, however, ruled that the activist be remanded in prison till an adjourned date of February 6 for hearing in a higher court. Meanwhile, an FCT high court has granted an order seeking the immediate release of Adeyanju. Danladi Senchi, a judge, gave the order while ruling on a fundamental rights suit filed by Mike Ozekhome, Adeyanju’s counsel. Raphael Adebayo, a close associate of Adeyanju, who is one of those behind the suit, told TheCable that the court, among other things, ruled that the activist’s detention contravenes his fundamental human rights. Efforts to get reaction of the police to the issue was unsuccessful as Jimoh Moshood, police spokesman, did not pick his calls and also failed to respond to the text message sent as of when this report was filed.]]>
