President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered massive transfer of police personnel in Zamfara; as part of deliberate measures to address cases of armed banditry in the state. The president disclosed this when a delegation of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria visited him at the State House, Abuja, yesterday. Buhari was reacting to the burning issue of violent conflicts in some parts of country. Last Saturday, police confirmed that, at least, 86 persons were killed by suspected herdsmen during an attack on Gashish District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. Police/Public Relations Officer in the state, Mathias Tyopev, confirmed the incident and said six people were injured while at least 50 houses, two vehicles and 15 motorcycles were razed. Residents told a different story. As at yesterday, the death toll had risen to 150, with over 100 houses burnt to the ground. Zamfara state has also been battling cattle rustling and kidnapping in recent months. Armed bandits and cattle thieves have been terrorising villages in the state, in the past months, with many innocent citizens killed and villages burnt or destroyed. Worried by persistent killings, ZamfaraGovernor, Abdul’aziz Yari, had on June 15, dropped his responsibility as chief security officer because he had no control over security machinery in the state. Yari said his decision was occasioned by the seeming helplessness of his administration and the people to check the persistent killings in the state. He frowned at the prevailing security situation in the state where, as the chief security officer, he could not take decisions on strategies for protecting the state and its people, and have them implemented. Regardless, Buhari told the Shari’ah delegation that he is putting in his best to address all security challenges in Zamfara and other parts of the country. He said following his dissatisfaction with the performance of the the Nigeria Police Force in Zamfara, he has ordered massive transfer of officers and men who had stayed three years and above, in the troubled state. The president also revealed that he had received a “stiff bill” from the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, for the restoration of the dilapidated infrastructure and facilities of the Federal Government-owned radio stations in all states of the Federation. He pledged that something would be done about the situation. The day after, residents affected by the incessant killings and attacks abandoned their homes and sought refuge in nearby villages perceived to be safe. The residents, mostly women and children in Gashish District left their homes and sought refuge in Barkin Ladin Local Government Secretariat. Villages affected by the attacks include Xlands, Gindin Akwati, Nghar, Kura falls and Kakuruk all in Gashish district of Barkin Ladi.]]>
