Another 83 Nigerians have voluntarily returned home from South Africa amid reported xenophobic attacks in the country, bringing the number of Nigerians repatriated under the voluntary return exercise to about 1,573.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the ministry, the returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, aboard a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg.

They were accompanied by two officials of the Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg.

Ebienfa said the latest evacuation was facilitated by private individuals who provided funds to purchase air tickets for the returning Nigerians.

The returnees were received at the airport on behalf of the Federal Government by the Director of the African Affairs Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Haruna Ali-Gombe.

Following their arrival, they were handed over to relevant government agencies for documentation and profiling before being reunited with their families.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Mission in South Africa, the private individuals who funded the air tickets and government agencies involved in receiving and reintegrating the returnees.

The latest arrival forms part of continuing efforts to assist Nigerians seeking to leave South Africa voluntarily amid concerns over reported xenophobic attacks and other safety challenges.

“The Federal Government remains committed to the welfare and safe return of all Nigerian citizens abroad,” the ministry stated.
