The Management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State, has condemned a raid allegedly carried out by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on its premises during a nighttime event on Sunday.

The facility, which houses former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s penthouse residence, was reportedly stormed by over 50 armed men, said to be EFCC operatives, who allegedly shot into the air, threatened attendees, and caused panic.

A viral video from the incident showed guests fleeing in confusion. Witnesses claimed that several people sustained injuries while trying to escape, and that the operatives seized luxury cars and other valuables.

In a statement, OOPL Managing Director Vitalis Ortese described the operation as a “Gestapo-like invasion of private property” and “a blatant violation” of the rights of guests and the organisation. He alleged that the raid was led by one “Olapade” and that neither OOPL security personnel nor the police officers stationed at the venue were informed beforehand or presented with a warrant.

Ortese insisted the event was a private gathering that had been publicly advertised days in advance. He said management had begun its own investigation and would escalate the matter to top authorities, including the EFCC, police, and Department of State Services.

“The management demands an explanation of these impudent actions from the Commission and an apology from the EFCC authorities for the infringement of our rights, and to all those who sustained injuries from the chaos,” the statement read. “Failure to do so will compel us to seek redress and sanctions as appropriate.”

The EFCC, in an earlier statement on its official X handle, confirmed that a sting operation was conducted in Abeokuta, during which 93 suspected internet fraudsters were arrested and 18 vehicles seized. However, the agency did not specify that OOPL was the location of the raid.
