A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 struck northern New Jersey late Saturday night, briefly shaking parts of the state and nearby areas in New York City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The tremor occurred at approximately 10:18 p.m., with its epicenter located in Hasbrouck Heights, Bergen County, near Teterboro Airport. It struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

While the quake was relatively small, tremors were reportedly felt in several neighborhoods across northern New Jersey, Brooklyn, and Westchester County. Residents in affected areas described a sudden jolt, prompting speculation about a gas explosion or falling tree before confirmation came from the USGS.

Bradford Billingsley, a Harlem resident, said he was watching television with friends when the furniture in his living room shook briefly. “We both felt a sudden jolt and looked at each other and said, ‘Was that an earthquake?’” he recounted.

New York City’s Emergency Management Department confirmed it was monitoring the situation, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage. In a statement, the agency said some residents may have felt tremors but there was no cause for alarm.

Xan Davidson, an analyst with the USGS, explained that while earthquakes are relatively rare on the East Coast, a magnitude 3.0 is considered minor and not typically associated with damage. “We would not expect there to be a lot of damage,” Davidson said. “It would just be shaking.”

Saturday’s event follows a more powerful 4.8 magnitude earthquake that rattled the region in April 2024. That quake, centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, was felt across multiple states and marked one of the strongest seismic events in the area in nearly a century.

Davidson noted that while East Coast quakes are infrequent, they can often be felt over a wider area compared to similar quakes on the West Coast. Saturday’s tremor was reportedly felt as far away as Connecticut.
