The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has condemned the recent killings in Jos, Plateau State, describing the attacks as a “heinous assault on innocent lives” and a grave violation of Nigeria’s Constitution and the rule of law.

In a statement signed by its President, Chief Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN, Bencher, the Society expressed shock over the coordinated attacks on rural communities which reportedly left scores dead, destroyed properties, and displaced families.

The legal body said the continued violence reflects a disturbing level of impunity and a failure of state protection mechanisms, warning that the repeated loss of innocent lives represents a “red line that must never be crossed.”

“The murder of innocent citizens is a direct affront to the Constitution and the sanctity of human existence,” the statement read.

The NLS also faulted what it described as apparent security lapses that have allowed non-state actors to operate freely in affected communities, leading to the escalation of violence in Plateau State.

It called for urgent action by the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Security Adviser (NSA), and the Plateau State Government.

Specifically, the group demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the killings, with the aim of identifying, arresting, and prosecuting all perpetrators, sponsors, and collaborators.

It also urged the deployment of additional security personnel to vulnerable areas, alongside strengthened community policing strategies to restore public confidence and security.

The Society further reminded the Federal Government that the protection of lives and property remains its primary constitutional duty under Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, noting that the recurring killings suggest a systemic failure requiring urgent political will beyond military responses.

The NLS expressed solidarity with the families of victims and the people of Plateau State, urging citizens to remain law-abiding while cooperating with security agencies by providing credible intelligence.

It reaffirmed its commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights in Nigeria.
