Leading international law experts have charged young professionals to embrace high ethical standards in their study, practice and research on international law as a key to unlock global recognition and success in this important field.

This call was made at the Maiden International Law Conference for Young Professionals organized by the Young Members Committee of the International Law Association, Nigeria (ILA-YMC) on Thursday, 26 February 2026, at Modan Hall, Aluko & Oyebode, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The one-day conference convened leading legal practitioners, academics, policymakers, and young professionals from across Nigeria to examine emerging global legal trends and advance Africa’s role in shaping international law.

The conference provided a dynamic forum for addressing critical global challenges, including climate change, artificial intelligence, cross-border commerce, and evolving dispute resolution mechanisms. Discussions emphasized Africa’s growing influence in the development of international legal norms and the importance of equipping young lawyers with globally relevant skills.

Delivering the Keynote Address, Michael Osilama Otu, Legal Counsel and Board Secretary (General Manager), Zenith Bank Plc, underscored the importance of institutional resilience and ethical leadership in a rapidly changing global landscape.

The first Plenary Session, “Beyond Borders: Climate Justice, Artificial Intelligence, Trade, and the Evolution of Global Legal Norms from an African Perspective,” explored the intersection of technology, environmental responsibility, and global governance.

The second Plenary Session, “Resolving Disputes in a Globalised Economy: International Arbitration, Cross-Border Commerce, and Africa’s Business Environment,” featured distinguished panelists who examined the role of arbitration and legal reform in enhancing investor confidence and facilitating cross-border trade.

The event also featured two Fireside Chats, which led compelling conversations on mentorship and preparing young lawyers for the future of global practice, emphasizing the need for practical training, technological competence, and a global outlook.

Another key highlight of the event was the Research Showcase, where young scholars presented innovative ideas and emerging scholarship, demonstrating the intellectual contributions of the next generation of international lawyers.

Beyond the technical sessions, the conference featured mentorship engagements, an awards and recognition ceremony, and a presidential dinner, fostering intergenerational dialogue, professional networking, and the celebration of excellence within the legal community.

In his remarks, Joshua Daranijo, Chairman of the ILA Nigeria YMC, noted that the success of the conference reflects a shared commitment to positioning African lawyers as active contributors to global legal development and to strengthening Africa’s voice in shaping international law practice.

Founded in Brussels in 1873, the International Law Association promotes the study and clarification of International Law, both public and private. The Nigerian Branch regularly hosts innovative lectures, seminars, conferences, and capacity-building programs to advance understanding of international law in Nigeria.

The conference marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s engagement with international law and demonstrated the commitment of young legal professionals to shaping the future of global legal practice from an African perspective.
