Dame Priscilla Kuye, the first female President of the Nigerian Bar Association, has said that Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, can only become the second female President of the NBA if she wins the 2026 national election.

Kuye made the clarification in a statement ahead of the NBA election, warning against any suggestion that Badejo-Okusanya would be the first woman to lead the Association if elected.

According to her, she already holds that historic record by the grace of God and would not want her achievement to be diminished.

“Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, will be the 2nd Female President of the NBA, if God says that she should win,” Kuye said.

She recalled her years of service to the NBA, stating that she served the Association in different capacities before becoming President.

Kuye said she first served the NBA Lagos Branch as Treasurer before serving the national body as Financial Secretary, 3rd Vice President, 2nd Vice President and 1st Vice President.

She also recalled that she contested the office of 1st Vice President against the late Mr. Segun Onakoya and the late Mr. Kanmi Osobu, and won by the grace of God.

“May the souls of Mr. Segun Onakoya and Kanmi Osobu rest in perfect peace,” she said.

The former NBA President questioned the level of service Badejo-Okusanya had rendered to the Association, saying she should publicly state her contributions to the NBA.

“What service has Oyinkan Badejo-Okusanya rendered to the NBA? Let her tell us,” Kuye said.

She further cautioned Badejo-Okusanya not to describe herself as a potential first female President of the NBA.

“Oyinkan, stop your lies. You cannot be the 1st Female President of the NBA. Dame Priscilla Kuye is, by the grace of God. Stop derogating from the achievement God gave me,” she said.

Kuye prayed that God would choose a worthy President who has served the Association.

“May God choose a worthy President who has served the NBA for us. Amen,” she added.

In an addendum to her statement, Kuye also recalled the crisis that followed the 1992 NBA Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, which she said she organised with her executive.

She said she escaped with her life during the conference, alleging that the Federal Government at the time wanted another candidate to emerge as President of the NBA, leading to the fiasco and botched 1992 election.

“I escaped with my life at the 1992 NBA Conference which I organised with my executive in Port Harcourt. The Federal Government wanted another candidate to win as President of the NBA, hence the fiasco and botched 1992 elections,” she said.

Kuye urged lawyers to begin praying for a just, fair and credible NBA election.

Her statement comes amid heightened debate around the 2026 NBA election, including questions about zoning, service to the Bar, credibility of the electoral process and the historical significance of the presidential contest.
