The Patriots, a group of eminent Nigerians, have criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the worsening security situation in the country.

The group, led by Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, cited the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State as a disturbing example.

On Friday, gunmen attacked communities within the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis of Oriire, Ogbomoso, abducting several students and seven teachers at Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, L.A. Primary School, Esiele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.

The attack left an assistant headmaster, identified as Joel Adesiyan, and a commercial motorcyclist dead.

A video which circulated on Monday showed the bandits beheading Michael Oyedokun, one of the abducted teachers, in captivity after tying him to a tree.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Thursday, Anyaoku described the incident as “worrisome” and called on the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive steps to reverse the tide of insecurity across the nation.

President Tinubu, on Monday, condemned the abduction and the reported “barbaric” killing of one of the abducted teachers, saying a “rescue operation is underway.”

“I am saddened by the reported killing of one of the teachers kidnapped by the gunmen who invaded the community,” the President had said.

“I sympathise with Governor Seyi Makinde and commend the steps he has taken on the matter. I sympathise with the families of the kidnapped victims.

“The Federal Government is working with the Oyo State Government to rescue all the victims. I commend the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioners of Police in Oyo and Kwara States for their quick intervention and the deployment of a tactical and Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to rescue the victims.”
