Former National Human Rights Commission chairman, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for minimizing the significance of undeclared assets reportedly owned by his wife and children overseas.

In August, publicly accessible records cited by West African Weekly indicated that a property at 113 Spring Creek Lane, Winter Springs, Florida, was registered under the names of Wike’s wife, Justice Eberechi Wike, and their three children Joaquin, Jazmyne, and Jordan.

Responding to the claims, Wike maintained that the property belonged to his wife as a gift from her family and denied any personal ownership. He also alleged that journalist Omoyele Sowore was bribed to present the property as his.

In a detailed interview with Channels Television, Wike said, “Sowore was bribed to lie against me. I have no house in America. The property was a gift to my wife from her family. My wife and children are Americans. I don’t even like going to America.”

Odinkalu, however, argued that under Nigeria’s Assets Declaration Rules, Wike is responsible for declaring assets owned by his spouse and minor children. On Thursday, he posted on X, stating: “The #DrunkenGlutton clearly hasn’t studied the #AssetDeclaration rules. Assets in the name of his wife and children since 2008 are his responsibility to declare. By the way, how old were his children in 2008? The story is just beginning…”
