Ekere Sunday Ebong, a 55-year-old lawyer, has been arrested for brutally attacking his wife in their home in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

In a video that went viral on social media, Ebong is seen mercilessly beating his wife, leading her to sustain grievous injuries. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command confirmed the authenticity of the video in a statement.

According to a press release by police spokesperson SP Odiko Macdon, Ebong is a “known habitual perpetrator of violent acts against his wife over the years.” The police acted swiftly to prevent further abuse and possible murder.

Ebong was taken into custody yesterday in handcuffs and charges against him are imminent, police said. The State Commissioner of Police CP Olatoye Durosinmi ordered the lawyer’s arrest after viewing the shocking video.

CP Durosinmi warned that the police would not tolerate such brazen human rights violations. He urged families to resolve disputes peacefully rather than resorting to violence.

In reaction, Minister of Women Affairs Uju Ohanenye vowed Ebong would be prosecuted even if his wife declines to press charges. Ohanenye said on social media that “justice will have its way” regardless of family pressure on the victimized woman.

Women’s advocates have decried how frequently domestic violence cases fail in court due to victims withdrawing complaints over family influence. Ebong’s high-profile case could see a shift in handling of such prosecutions going forward.

Recall that NBA President Yakubu Maikyau SAN had instructed the Uyo Branch to investigate Ebong for professional misconduct.

The NBA’s Human Rights Committee had also examined the incident to potentially aid criminal prosecution.
