The question about who failed Nigeria cannot be less than a rhetorical question in the sense that it is all about ‘individual’s accountability’ as citizens of Nigeria. Many a time, some citizens blame a particular government in power- in fact, some blame the past military government for what Nigeria has become of today; to the extent that a grownup man blames his parents for whatever happens to him in his future! However, on a critical analysis, we all need to reflect on our roles as citizens of Nigeria: is it actually only the political actors in power that have blames in this regard of the Nigerian worse situations complained about?! Is Nigeria actually the problem or Nigerians?! We as Nigerians need to change our ways to have a way in Nigeria! We cannot continue with our present ways of life and expect something better! Selfishness, greed for wealth and power, oppression of the weak, corruption, self-centeredness, etc. are the ways of life of a number of Nigerian citizens (the professional and the non-professional). How do we expect Nigeria to be better with these ways of life?! We cannot expect an angel to rule Nigeria; it has to be a human (as God has already ordained); in essence, a human being from among fellow Nigerians.
In other words, a human with traits of: Selfishness, greed for wealth and power, oppression of the weak, corruption, self-centeredness, etc. among other Nigerians (as who they are) will surely win political elections and hold the power of the nation! Why then do we easily blame another person when we are also not clean and pure from some (if not all) of the allegations that we make against the other person?! For instance: the judiciary, the executive and the legislature are administered by human beings: our situations will be better if those human beings are people of equity and good conscience, just as we the governed have resolved to always be with absolute determination: people who care for others; people who are merciful; people who are ‘JUST’ in its overwhelming definitions; people of high integrity; and people of high values, morality and personal integrity! Even as lawyers, some of us could easily blame others; how did we make the resources that we gathered?! We say, ‘some will say ‘we benefit where there is world of unresolveable conflicts’! If the whole nation is a conflict zone (a warfare) rather than a peaceful zone (a welfare), then, how do we expect something better?! Our mentality as citizens is that of ‘if it does not become worse for one, another person’s cannot be better’! We are indeed the ‘architects’ of all that we are experiencing today as Nigerians!
Therefore, as for me, finding ‘who failed Nigeria?!’ has its answers in the individual Nigerian! We should hold ourselves individually accountable if we expect a better change of the current system! That change that we all expect, starts from you and me; let us do a test for at least a year that we all do that ‘which is right and just’ for God and humanity; I can tell that what we would all enjoy for this sacrifice may be enough to sustain us all for over a decade because ‘our situation is like this because we are like this’! ‘Our situation is and remains our mirror! One day, we shall give account on earth to Almighty God! What then will be your report to Almighty God on that Day as a Nigerian citizen?!
