Jessica Krug, a white professor, who recently revealed that she has pretended to be black for years, has resigned as staff of George Washington University (GWU) in the United States.

The institution took to its social media page to break the news on Wednesday.

“Update regarding Jessica Krug: Dr. Krug has resigned her position, effective immediately. Her classes for this semester will be taught by other faculty members, and students in those courses will receive additional information this week,” it wrote on Twitter.

Krug, an associate professor of history and Africana studies, recently came under criticism after she revealed in an article that she was not a black person — as she has made many to believe for years.

In the article dated September 3, she also revealed that she is actually a white, Jewish woman from suburban Kansas City.

“For the better part of my adult life, every move I’ve made, every relationship I’ve formed, has been rooted in the napalm toxic soil of lies. Not just any lies,” Krug wrote.

“To an escalating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness.”

She attributed her false identity claims to “mental health demons,” but said that does not excuse her actions.

The professor also expressed remorse for masquerading as a black woman, noting that she had lacked the courage to disclose the truth for long.

“There are no words in any language to express the depth of my remorse, but then again: there shouldn’t be. Words are never the point,” she added.

Her resignation comes about a week after the controversial article went viral, prompting the Washington-based university to announce that she would not resume teaching this semester.

The development also comes years after Rachel Dolezal, a US black activist, also generated controversies for disguising as black despite being a white.

Like Krug, Dolezal had in 2015 resigned as president of the Spokane, Washington branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), after disclosing her identity.
