Forty-eight hours after the launch of the e-Naira, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has washed its hands off claims that it is disbursing 50 billion e-Naira currency to the public.

The bank, in a statement on Wednesday by its Director Corporate Communications, denied social media allegations that it is disbursing e-Naira currency to citizens.

CBN also disassociated itself from a twitter handle @enaira_cbdc whose activities it described as criminal and illegal.

According to the CBN: “The impostor handle and fraudulent persons have been posting messages related to the e-Naira with the intent of wooing unsuspecting Nigerians with claims that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), among other falsities, is disbursing the sum of 50 Billion eNaira currency”.

These impostors, the apex bank, said “are bent on defrauding innocent and unsuspecting members of the public through the links attached to their messages for application to obtain eNaira wallets and become beneficiaries of the said 50 billion eNaira currency”.

The Central of Nigeria said: “It is not the owner of that Twitter handle (@enaira_cbdc) and indeed suspended its presence on Twitter following the Federal Government’s Ban”.

To this end, members of the public have been warned: “to be wary of fraudsters who have resolved to take advantage of unsuspecting Nigerians”.

The bank urged members of the public to seek clarifications on information about the e-Naira either by visiting the e-Naira website: www.enaira.gov.ng or calling the e-Naira contact centre on 080069362472 or visiting any CBN Branch nearest to them.

The current official social media handles of the eNaira are: www.facebook.com/myenaira; www.instagram.com/myenaira and www.youtube.com/myenaira.
