President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate employment of 200 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) award recipients into the federal civil service in recognition of their exemplary service to the nation during the 2020–2023 service years.

In addition to federal appointments, each awardee will receive a cash reward of ₦250,000 and a fully funded postgraduate scholarship to any Nigerian university, up to the doctorate level.

The President, represented by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, made the announcement during the combined President’s NYSC Honours Award Ceremony (2020–2023) held Tuesday in Abuja.

Ten physically challenged ex-corps members, who sustained injuries in the line of service, were also granted automatic employment and included in the scholarship package. “We will never forget their sacrifices,” the President said.

President Tinubu praised the honorees for their patriotism, discipline, commitment, and integrity, assuring them that the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission would immediately commence the recruitment process.

“In appreciation of their service to the nation, each awardee will receive ₦250,000 and a scholarship to pursue postgraduate programmes up to the doctorate level in any Nigerian university,” he stated.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to youth development, pointing to several ongoing initiatives focused on skills development, education, digital technology, and entrepreneurship.

Among those honoured were the top four male and female awardees selected through a rigorous multistage screening process. The male category included Nunaya Polycarp Nunaya (Adamawa, served in Kwara), Okpogbo Alvin Chinedu (Imo, served in Cross River), Dr. Ugwa Obinna Mark (Abia, served in Cross River), and Rabiu Quadri Mayokun (Osun, served in Rivers).

The female awardees were Akase Pati Ence Nguwasen (Benue, served in Gombe) and Igwe Anne Chikaodi (Enugu, served in Sokoto).

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, hailed the President’s gesture as a landmark in youth empowerment, describing the awardees as “true role models.”

He noted that the recent increase in corps members’ monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000 reflects the government’s acknowledgement of their vital contributions. “This is not a political gesture; it is an economic response to current realities,” he said.

Olawande also praised the growing involvement of young Nigerians in governance, with several appointed as ministers and agency heads. He acknowledged the support of the National Assembly and pledged continued efforts to strengthen youth-focused programmes.

Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinmuda Nafiu, expressed deep gratitude to the government for its support, describing the youth as “the future of our great nation.”

He highlighted the scheme’s achievements, including the deployment of over 6,000 core medical personnel in 2025, benefiting more than four million Nigerians through the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers.

The DG revealed that over 250,000 corps members are trained annually under the revamped Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, now focused on tech-driven skills.

Nafiu also announced recognition for 10 beneficiaries of the NYSC Hope Alive Programme—former corps members who sustained life-altering injuries during service. “They are not just honorees; they are heroes of our Republic,” he said.

He appealed for the speedy passage of the NYSC Trust Fund Bill to establish sustainable funding for the scheme, calling the legislation vital for its future.

In closing, Nafiu urged awardees to remain ambassadors of unity and innovation. “You may no longer wear khaki, but you now wear something more enduring—the confidence of a great nation.”

One of the awardees, Ezieme Francis Uba, described the honour as deeply fulfilling. “Nothing gives greater joy than knowing you’re gainfully employed. I thank Mr. President, my parents, and my fellow corps members for their support,” he said.
