The Anambra State Government has raided and sealed a baby factory disguised as a hospital in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

The facility, operating under the name “Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity” and located at 1 School Road near Tansian University, was shut down following months of surveillance and intelligence gathering by state authorities. The crackdown began on Friday, July 25, and culminated in the full sealing of the premises on Saturday.

During the operation, officials from the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with security agencies, arrested key staff and operatives of the illegal facility, including five pregnant women and 10 others. Authorities discovered that the supposed hospital was engaged in serious medical malpractice and criminal activity.

Speaking after the raid, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, revealed that the facility was operating with a falsified licence and was owned by a self-proclaimed medical doctor from Delta State. He described the hospital as a front for a notorious baby trafficking syndicate.

Obidike said investigations uncovered that the syndicate trafficked and exploited girls aged between 15 and 21, many of whom were reportedly held against their will, impregnated, and forced to sell their babies into illegal adoption networks.

“This crackdown is a significant victory in the ongoing battle against child trafficking, human rights violations, and gender-based abuse,” the commissioner stated.

He commended the role of the State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit and the Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team in identifying and shutting down the facility. Obidike also urged residents to assist the government by reporting suspicious healthcare practices.

“The state government is committed to shutting down all illegal medical establishments and safeguarding public health,” he added. “We are determined to rid Anambra of fake medical practitioners and criminal networks that exploit the vulnerable.”

A full-scale investigation has been launched, and the suspects are expected to face charges including human trafficking, unlawful detention, and child exploitation.

Obidike issued a strong warning to operators of unlicensed medical facilities: “Shut down now or face the full weight of the law. We will not compromise the safety and dignity of our people.”
