Amnesty International Nigeria has vowed to use Senator Francis Fadahunsi’s case as an example in its campaign against inflammatory political rhetoric and electoral violence, following controversial remarks attributed to the senator in a viral video ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.

Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, was alleged in the video to have urged his supporters to “kill” members of the Accord Party, whose governorship candidate is incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The senator has, however, denied calling for physical attacks, insisting that the viral video was edited in a manner that distorted the meaning and context of his statement.
Speaking on Thursday, Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, condemned the remarks attributed to the senator and said the organisation intended to make his case a test of accountability for politicians accused of promoting electoral violence.
“We are going to use him as an example because this is the first time. We had so many other terrible politicians say terrible things ahead of elections, but this one is exceptional,” Sanusi said.
Referring to the words allegedly contained in the viral recording, he added: “A situation whereby somebody came out on record saying ‘kill them wherever you find them’, I believe that that person does not deserve any peace again because advocacy of hatred is a crime under international law as well as Nigerian laws.”
Sanusi said Amnesty International would challenge what he described as a culture of impunity among Nigerian politicians, particularly when statements capable of encouraging violence are made during election periods.
“Therefore, we are going to use this man as an example to show that the impunity by Nigerian politicians cannot continue and we cannot tolerate it again; the people have to hold them to account if the government could not do that,” he said.
Beyond the immediate controversy involving Fadahunsi, Amnesty International Nigeria said it planned to launch an international “name-and-shame” campaign against politicians accused of advocating electoral violence.
Sanusi said the organisation would leverage Amnesty International’s presence in about 150 countries to draw international attention to individuals making statements considered capable of encouraging political violence.
“We will do an international name-and-shame of those advocating for electoral violence. Amnesty International has branches in 150 countries. We will ensure they are named and shamed in those countries and alert their governments to how dangerous these people are,” he said.
According to Sanusi, holding political actors accountable for inflammatory statements ahead of elections would send an important signal as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
He maintained that preventing political violence required consequences for rhetoric capable of inciting supporters and undermining peaceful elections.
The controversy has already attracted the attention of security agencies.
Fadahunsi was interrogated on Wednesday at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo over the viral video and the comments attributed to him.
Speaking to journalists after the interrogation, the senator denied directing his supporters to physically attack or kill Accord Party members.
Fadahunsi maintained that his reference to “killing” the Accord Party was political language intended to mean defeating the party decisively through the ballot box in the August 15 governorship election.
He insisted that he was talking about using votes to politically “kill” the Accord Party and not about attacking its members or their families.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the Osun governorship election, with concerns continuing to mount over rhetoric and incidents capable of undermining a peaceful poll.
While Amnesty International maintains that the remarks attributed to Fadahunsi warrant strong accountability measures, the senator continues to reject the interpretation given to the viral recording, insisting that his comments were taken out of context and did not amount to a call for violence.
