President Bola Tinubu has reiterated that the establishment of state police is inevitable as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security across Nigeria.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during a courtesy visit by a delegation of prominent Katsina indigenes led by Governor Dikko Radda, the president affirmed the federal government’s commitment to confronting insecurity directly.
Highlighting the spike in banditry in Katsina State, Tinubu directed security agencies to reassess operations in the state and confirmed that advanced military equipment and surveillance technology, including drones, would be deployed. He also announced plans to bolster the capacity of newly recruited forest guards.
“The security challenges that we are facing are surmountable. Yes, we have porous borders. We inherited weaknesses that could have been addressed earlier. It is a challenge that we must fix, and we are facing it,” the president said.
Tinubu emphasized the holistic approach to security, insisting that state police would form a critical part of the solution. “I am reviewing all aspects of security; I have to create state police. We are looking at that holistically,” he added, while calling for daily updates on security operations in Katsina.
He reassured Nigerians of the government’s resolve to protect citizens, property, places of worship, and public spaces. “We will defeat insecurity. We must protect our children, our people, our livelihood, our places of worship, and our recreational spaces. They can’t intimidate us,” he said.
The president also paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, praising his legacy and noting that the country inherited a stable and structured political system.
Governor Radda expressed gratitude to Tinubu for his support, while former Governor Aminu Masari and Wazirin Katsina, Ibrahim Ida, commended the president for ongoing infrastructure investments. Ida, however, called for prioritization of security in southern Katsina and an upgrade of the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport.
The initiative for state policing, first studied by a federal committee in February 2024, has garnered widespread support, although 20 states had yet to submit reports as of March, according to Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
