Australian police have charged a 43-year-old man over an alleged targeted attack on independent federal MP Helen Haines, who remains in a critical but stable condition after being struck by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria.

Victoria Police said Haines was hit by a vehicle at about 3:35 p.m. local time on Monday on Murphy Street, where her parliamentary office is located. The force said the accused has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and the Commonwealth offence of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Police added that they would allege the incident was targeted.

The suspect has not been formally named by police, although Australian media have identified him as Brendan Nugent, a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee. He remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court.

Haines, 65, was taken to hospital following the incident and underwent surgery. Police subsequently described her condition as “critical but stable,” while Australian media reported that she had lost one of her legs. The reported amputation has not been independently confirmed in the police statement cited in the available material.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged attack have attracted further attention after the suspect’s father disclosed that his family had known Haines for more than two decades.

Rod Nugent and his partner, Christine Cunningham, said they had been friends with the MP “for more than 20 years” and described what happened as “devastating and unfathomable.”

“We would like to sincerely thank members of the local community and police who came to Helen’s aid yesterday after the shocking and horrific crime,” the family said.

“Helen Haines is a deeply respected, valued and much loved member of our local community. All of our love and all of our thoughts are with Helen and her family and friends.”

The family also said it would assist Victoria Police with the investigation.

The alleged attack was brought to an end with the intervention of people nearby, including local barber Ricky Jefferies, who said he pulled the suspect from the vehicle and detained him until police arrived.

Jefferies said he searched the man and found a knife in his pocket, which he removed and threw away. He stressed that the accused had not drawn the knife.

“He didn’t pull it out. I just wasn’t comfortable with his movements and so I took it out of his pocket and threw it away,” Jefferies said.

He also recounted how other bystanders rushed to assist Haines, including one person who positioned himself in front of the still-moving vehicle.

“They didn’t even check for danger, they just ran to help,” he said.

Victoria Police said a highway patrol unit happened to be nearby and arrived at the scene within eight seconds of receiving the emergency call. Officers later executed a search warrant at a property on Great Alpine Road in Tarrawingee.

Police said the incident appeared to be isolated and that there were no other known threats connected with the case, although officers would maintain a presence in Wangaratta.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Haines remained in a “critical but stable condition” and praised Jefferies for intervening despite not knowing what danger he might face.

“It’s a reminder that at the worst of times we see the best of the Australian character,” Albanese said. Pasted text

The incident has also prompted renewed concerns about the security of elected officials in Australia.

South Australia Police announced that MPs in the neighbouring state would receive a security briefing covering protective arrangements and precautions. The force said security measures for politicians were under constant review and adjusted in response to intelligence.

In Wangaratta, residents left flowers and messages outside Haines’s electorate office as the community reacted to the attack. Local mayor Irene Grant described the incident as an “assassination attempt,” although police have so far limited their public position to alleging that Haines was specifically targeted.

Haines has represented the federal electorate of Indi as an independent since 2019 and has become a prominent member of Australia’s parliamentary crossbench. Before entering politics, she worked as a nurse, midwife and public health researcher.

She has also been associated with political integrity and anti-corruption reforms, having proposed legislation for a national anti-corruption watchdog in 2021 and later being credited with helping drive the creation of Australia’s National Anti-Corruption Commission.

Police investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
