The Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye, has commended the collaborative efforts of security agencies and the Bayelsa State Government in the rescue of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro from the hands of kidnappers.

Omukoro, who was kidnapped on Saturday, June 21 and regained freedom on Thursday, July 3, spent 12 days in captivity.

Justice Ayemieye expressed gratitude for his safe rescue.

A statement by the Head of Media and Information of the Bayelsa State Judiciary, Mr Julius Nyananyo, on Saturday stated, “The successful outcome is attributed to the tireless efforts of the Government of Bayelsa State, security agencies, the Nigerian Bar Association, organisations, community leaders, and the Judiciary family.

“The Chief Judge extends her gratitude to everyone involved in securing Hon. Justice Omukoro’s safe return. Special commendation goes to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, GCON, and members of the National Judicial Council. Senator Douye Diri, Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, the State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and Rt. Hon. Ingobere Abraham, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, for their pivotal role. The security agencies, particularly the DSS, the Nigeria Police Force, among others, for their strategic operations, synergy, and dedication.”

The Chief Judge also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Bar Association led by Mazi Afam Osigwe, the Yenagoa and Sagbama branches of the NBA, and the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria for their contributions.

She thanked various organisations and respected community leaders for their support while expressing deep gratitude to the “family and loved ones of Justice Omukoro, whose strength, patience, and cooperation remain deeply valued.”

According to her, the rescue operation underscored the power of collaboration, patience, and professionalism in resolving such delicate situations.

“The Chief Judge noted that the operation underscores the power of collaboration, patience, and professionalism in resolving such delicate situations,” the statement read.

She further said that “As we celebrate this positive outcome, we remain committed to addressing the root causes of such incidents and further ensuring the safety of all judicial officers in the state.

“We are happy to state that Justice Omukoro is now receiving medical and psychological support and requests privacy during this period of recovery.”

The Bayelsa State Judiciary further expressed profound appreciation for the outpouring of support from the public.
