*Admits Errors in 2025 SSCE Results, Revises Performance Figures Upward

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has admitted to errors in the results released earlier this week for the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), announcing a significant revision of performance figures.

According to the Council, 1,239,884 candidates now have credit passes in five subjects or more, including English Language and Mathematics representing 62.96% of the total 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the examination.

This marks a substantial improvement from the initially announced figure of 754,545 candidates (38.32%) said to have achieved the same benchmark.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos on Friday evening, the Head of WAEC National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, acknowledged lapses in the marking of serialized objective papers in certain subjects, which led to the inaccurate results.

“Gentlemen of the media, with a deep sense of sorrow and regret, I, on behalf of the Registrar to Council, Management, and Staff of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, welcome you to this press briefing to announce the reviewed results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates in Nigeria,” Dr. Dangut began.

He recalled that on Monday, August 4, WAEC announced the release of the 2025 WASSCE results, noting that 1,969,313 candidates participated—976,787 males (49.60%) and 992,526 females (50.40%).

“We initially reported that 1,718,090 candidates (87.24%) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects (with or without English and/or Mathematics), and 754,545 (38.32%) obtained credits in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics,” he said.

However, during an internal post-examination review, WAEC discovered discrepancies in the grading of serialized objective papers. These errors were traced to a wrongly applied serialized code file used in printing the English Language Objective Test (Paper 3), resulting in incorrect marking.

“The Council, being an accountable and transparent organization, thoroughly investigated all the serialized papers—Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics—and discovered the anomaly,” Dr. Dangut explained.

He clarified that schools using computer-based testing modes were not affected by the error.

“Consequently, the observable decline in performance earlier announced was partly due to this error. We sincerely apologize for the emotional and mental distress caused to candidates and all stakeholders. The anomaly has been resolved, and candidates can now access their corrected results via the WAEC portal: www.waecdirect.org,” he added.

Of the 1,239,884 candidates who now have five credits including English and Mathematics, 582,065 (46.95%) are male, while 657,819 (53.05%) are female.

Dr. Dangut noted that compared to 2024’s figure of 72.12%, this year’s 62.96% represents a 9.16% decline in performance.

He urged candidates to apply for their digital certificates 48 hours after checking their results online, provided they have fulfilled financial obligations to WAEC. He also confirmed that updated result listings will be sent to schools shortly.

“This is a difficult moment for us, but we must admit that it is deeply embarrassing,” Dr. Dangut said. “We acknowledge the emotional ordeal experienced by candidates, parents, teachers, school administrators, Ministries of Education, the media, and other stakeholders. WAEC is working hard to ensure such a situation does not recur.”

When asked if all candidates should recheck their results, Dr. Dangut responded affirmatively, assuring the public that the issue had been fully addressed. However, he remained silent on whether disciplinary actions would be taken against those responsible for the error.

The initial results had sparked nationwide outrage, especially among high-performing candidates in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), who recorded unexpected failures in English Language on the WAEC results.

One parent, whose child scored 368 in the UTME and had distinctions in eight WASSCE subjects, lamented a failure in English Language, calling for an immediate review.

Earlier this year, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) also faced technical hitches during the UTME, leading to retakes for some candidates.
