The Central Bank of Nigeria has disowned a viral document claiming that its Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, approved the release of a $46 billion developmental grant to a private organisation.

The purported letter, dated August 13, 2026, was addressed to Atufeg Empowerment and Development Center and one Amb. Engr. Atunde Femi Gabriel.
It claimed that Cardoso had endorsed and authorised the immediate transfer of $46 billion into a designated account for the execution of purportedly approved national empowerment and developmental projects.
The document, which allegedly bore the signature of the CBN governor, further claimed that the authorisation was “final and binding.”
Reacting through its official social media account on Thursday, the apex bank shared an image of the purported letter and declared it fake.
“This content is FAKE. Let the public be guided,” the CBN stated.
The bank consequently urged Nigerians to disregard the document and exercise caution when dealing with purported grant announcements circulated through social media and other unofficial channels.
It advised members of the public to verify information relating to its policies, decisions and operations through the bank’s official communication platforms before acting on it.
The disclaimer followed the increasing circulation of fabricated documents and announcements falsely presented as communications from government agencies and financial institutions.
Members of the public are particularly advised against releasing personal or banking information, paying processing fees or transferring money in response to unverified grant offers.
