The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has temporarily shut down its result checker portal, www.waecdirect.org, citing technical difficulties just days after the release of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

In an announcement made via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, WAEC stated:

“WAEC hereby informs the general public that the result checker portal @waecdirect.org is temporarily shut down due to technical issues. Please bear with us.”

The Council assured candidates, parents, and schools that efforts were ongoing to restore access within 24 hours.

“The Council is working assiduously to ensure that candidates are able to access their results in the next 24 hours,” it added.

The temporary shutdown has triggered concern among students and parents, especially as many candidates have encountered difficulties logging in or accessing result pages since the results were released on Monday, August 4.

According to a only 38.32% of candidates who sat for the 2025 WASSCE secured five credits, including English and Mathematics a significant decline of 33.8% compared to the previous year. Out of the 1,969,313 candidates who took the exam, 754,545 met this benchmark, with female candidates accounting for 53.99% of the successful students.

In total, 1,718,090 candidates obtained credits in at least five subjects irrespective of the subject combination.

However, WAEC withheld 192,089 results — representing 9.75% of the total — due to alleged examination malpractice, including organised cheating and the use of mobile phones during the exams. The Council stated that investigations were ongoing and affected candidates would be informed through their schools.

WAEC also disclosed that over 12,000 candidates with special needs participated in the examination. Among them were 112 visually impaired candidates, 615 with hearing impairments, and others with physical or mental disabilities.

Additionally, the results of 451,796 candidates are still being processed due to various issues, which WAEC assured would be resolved soon.

In total, 1,973,365 candidates registered for the 2025 WASSCE across more than 23,000 schools nationwide.
