The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, with a significant drop in performance recorded compared to previous years.

In a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, August 4, 2025, the Council announced that candidates who sat the exams between April 24 and June 20 can now access their results on the WAEC portal: www.waecdirect.org.

At a press briefing held at WAEC’s national headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, described the 2025 exam cycle as a “huge success” despite notable logistical challenges and the implementation of a new strategy to curb malpractice.

Out of 1,969,313 candidates who took the exam across 23,554 schools, only 754,545 (38.32%) obtained credits and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This marks a significant 33.8% drop from the 72.12% pass rate recorded in 2024.

Dr. Dangut attributed the decline to WAEC’s introduction of serialised objective test papers in key subjects such as Mathematics, English, Biology, and Economics. This measure, he said, reduced opportunities for collusion and compelled candidates to rely on their individual preparation.

WAEC deployed a real-time digital scoring system for the first time during the July 3–21 coordination and marking period, which facilitated faster and more accurate result compilation.

Of all candidates, 1,517,517 (77.06%) had their full results released, while 451,796 (22.94%) had some subjects still being processed due to technical issues, which WAEC assured would be resolved in the coming days.

Additionally, 192,089 results (9.75%) are currently being withheld over cases of examination malpractice, including use of mobile phones and collusion. This is an improvement from the 11.92% withheld in 2024.

WAEC registered 12,178 candidates with special needs. Of this number, 112 were visually impaired, 615 had hearing difficulties, 52 had mental challenges, and 37 had physical disabilities. The Council confirmed that all received the necessary accommodations during the exams.

Female candidates outperformed their male counterparts slightly in the category of five credits including English and Mathematics. Out of the 754,545 successful candidates, 407,353 (53.99%) were female, while 347,192 (46.01%) were male. Overall, 992,526 females (50.40%) and 976,787 males (49.60%) participated in the exam.

The 2025 exam marked the beginning of WAEC’s phased transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for school candidates. While most students still opted for the traditional paper-and-pencil format, some participated in a CBT pilot. WAEC aims to fully digitise the school exam format by 2026.

“This year’s exam places us among the world’s foremost examining bodies to pilot computer-based achievement testing for schools,” Dr. Dangut said.

WAEC also released a step-by-step guide to help candidates access their results:

  1. Visit www.waecdirect.org
  2. Enter your 10-digit WAEC Examination Number (7-digit centre number + 3-digit candidate number)
  3. Enter your 4-digit Examination Year (e.g., 2025)
  4. Select the Type of Examination
  5. Enter the e-PIN Voucher Number
  6. Enter the Personal Identification Number (PIN) on your e-PIN
  7. Click “Submit” and wait for your results to display

Dr. Dangut cautioned state governments indebted to WAEC that the results of their sponsored candidates would remain inaccessible until outstanding payments are cleared.

He also issued a warning to fraudulent website operators and compromised exam officials attempting to exploit WAEC’s name and platforms: “These unscrupulous elements have become a thorn in the Council’s flesh. Some have already been apprehended, and appropriate sanctions will follow.”
