The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Americas, USA, has described as unfortunate the visa restrictions slammed on Nigeria by the United States government.

Chairman of NIDO Americas, Ms Patience Key, said the Federal Government and all Nigerians must see the US action as a wake-up call to end the Boko Haram menace and ensure good governance to make Nigeria better for everybody.

She said this in a statement made available to our correspondent on Saturday by the Public Relations Officer of NIDO, Dr Yinka Tella.

The US accused Nigeria and six other countries of not sharing security information about their citizens seeking to relocate to the US and consequent upon this suspended issuance of immigrant visas to citizens of these countries.

Key expressed the organisation’s disappointment and outrage by the suspension of issuance of visas to Nigerian immigrants.

The statement read, “We encourage a focused and firm stand on doing what is right for the Nigerian people. Demanding good governance, accountability and an effective security apparatus is a sine qua non.

“We must place special value on the life, welfare and properties of the Nigerian people. That is the basic duty of any responsible government. Let us rise and act decisively to end the insurgency and do everything possible to put smiles on the faces of the average Nigerian, not just the elite.”

The NIDO chairman stated the US President Donald Trump capitalised on the security situation in Nigeria to slam the ban on the country, while calling on Nigeria to ensure an improved security situation all over country.

She said further, “Our disappointment about the suspension of visa issuance to Nigerian immigrants stems from the systemic failure of Nigeria’s security architecture that has enabled Boko Haram and the ISIS global terrorist network to cause more than 27000 deaths, while displacing about 2.3 million persons in the last 10 years.

“We are outraged because the Trump administration has exploited this unsavoury situation in our Nigerian homeland to further its unfortunate agenda of pandering to the most extreme elements of its base.”

Key said Nigeria was ranked as the most educated and productive immigrant community in the United States, stressing that Nigerian immigrants were overwhelmingly law-abiding, hard-working, and ethically-driven.

While acknowledging the Federal Government’s efforts to address the security data and information-sharing issues referenced by the US government in taking this action, the organisation called on Nigerians at home and abroad to see this development as an opportunity to rededicate themselves to the cause of building a new and better Nigeria that works for its people.

Key announced that the organisation had developed blueprints on various aspects of Nigeria’s security situation, economy and polity, which she said were being shared with stakeholders.
