Two suspected cult members have been arraigned before a Dutse Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly assaulting police officers, resisting arrest and threatening to kill members of a police team.
The defendants, Ogene Bright, 23, and Sunday Adamu, 25, were arraigned on Tuesday on charges bordering on unlawful assembly, resisting arrest, causing grievous hurt and criminal intimidation of police officers.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Prosecution counsel Ogehenekaro Agbodo told the court that the alleged offences occurred on July 17, 2026, after Assistant Superintendent of Police Tukur Abubakar led a team of detectives to invite Bright, Adamu and another suspect, Victor Adamu, to the police station.
Victor Adamu was said to be at large at the time of the court proceedings.
According to the prosecution, the police invitation followed complaints by residents of Tasha Village in Abuja, who allegedly accused the defendants of terrorising members of the community.
Agbodo alleged that the defendants violently refused to honour the police invitation and instead confronted the detectives sent to bring them to the station.
She told the court that Victor Adamu allegedly attacked ASP Abubakar, identified as the DCO3 of the Gwagwa Police Division, and inflicted injuries on him.
The prosecution further alleged that the defendants contacted other members of their fraternity, who joined them in attacking the police officers.
“They also threatened to kill the police officers if they laid hands on any of their members,” Agbodo told the court.
She said the police subsequently mobilised reinforcement on July 18, leading to the arrest of Bright and Sunday Adamu, while Victor Adamu allegedly remained at large.
According to the prosecution, the defendants were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for their alleged actions during police investigation and interrogation.
Agbodo said the alleged offences contravened Sections 103, 171, 248 and 379 of the Penal Code Law.
Following their not-guilty pleas, Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Alkali admitted both defendants to bail in the sum of ₦2 million each.
The magistrate also ordered each defendant to provide two sureties in the same amount.
The court directed that the sureties must either be civil servants on Grade Level 14 or reputable members of society with reliable means of identification.
Magistrate Alkali subsequently adjourned the matter until September 14, 2026, for hearing.
