A two-storey plaza situated on Lagos Street in Garki Village, within the Garki District of Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, collapsed during the late hours of Wednesday, coinciding with a heavy downpour.

Vanguard reports that the building’s collapse occurred late Wednesday night, coinciding with a heavy downpour.

Rescue operations have been underway, and up to 37 individuals have been successfully rescued from the scene. Tragically, two individuals have suffered fatal injuries as a result of the incident, as confirmed by emergency officials.

The nature of the rescue efforts faced initial challenges due to a lack of immediate access to excavating equipment, necessitating primarily manual efforts. Dr. Abbas Idriss, the Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), verified these details.

Dr. Idriss acknowledged the combined efforts of various stakeholders, including community members, who engaged in manual rescue efforts to free trapped individuals. He also revealed that the rescue operation continues, although progress has been impeded by ongoing rain. Plans are in motion to introduce an excavator to facilitate the extraction of people from the debris.

The rescue team has successfully evacuated 37 individuals to medical facilities in Abuja, where they are receiving necessary medical attention. The ongoing operation aims to ensure the safety of others still potentially trapped under the rubble while awaiting additional equipment to bolster the rescue efforts.
