In a video currently making rounds on social media, popular television Presenter and Host, Rufai Oseni and a Guest on the Arise TV morning show identified as Jesutega Onokpasa a lawyer were seen in a heated verbal exchange following a disagreement over comments by another guest, lawyer Mr James Ezike, apparently impugning the integrity of Supreme Court Justices.

In the Two minutes, 20 seconds video sighted in a video, a guest had expressed lack of confidence in the independence of the Supreme Court and foreclosed the possibility of the Supreme Court varying the recent decision of the Presidential Election Petition Court.

When asked by Reuben Abati, if he was impugning the integrity of the Supreme Court, the said Guest answered in the affirmative.

In his response, Mr Onokpasa did not hide his displeasure at the indicting comments made by the Guest about the Supreme Court. In his words, “I will not see here and watch you impugn the integrity of the Supreme Court. You are not a Justice of the Supreme Court.” He added, “If you were such a good lawyer, maybe you would have been a Justice of the Supreme Court.”

His comments however did not go down well with Rufai Oseni who demanded that the comments be taken down. However Mr. Onokpasa remained adamant and insisted he would not take down the comment.

This resulted in verbal exchanges between Mr. Onokpasa and Rufai which spanned a considerable timeframe within the program.

Recall that on the 6th of September, 2023, the Court of Appeal sitting as the Presidential Election Petition Court dismissed the petitions of the Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside their Presidential Candidates challenging the declaration and return of APC’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President in the February 23 Presidential election.

The judgment has however elicited a flurry of reactions and has been the subject of several analyses in social discussions even as both parties have indicated that they will appeal the judgment to the Supreme Court.
