Law professor Felicia Branch has been dismissed from her position at the University of Arkansas Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law following controversial comments she made on Facebook regarding the death of far-right activist Charlie Kirk.

Branch had publicly criticized Kirk for his methods, including doxxing queer Black activist Preston Mitchum, and stated she would “not pull back from CELEBRATING that an evil man died by the method he chose to embrace,” according to Above the Law.

The comments quickly drew backlash from prominent Arkansas Republicans, including the state governor and attorney general, who reportedly pressured the university to take action against Branch, as reported by the Arkansas Times.

In September, Branch was suspended with pay pending an investigation. On September 24, Bowen School of Law Dean Colin Crawford terminated her employment, citing the need to “balance free expression against standards of appropriate professional behavior.”

Earlier this month, an appeals panel composed of UA Little Rock faculty recommended that Branch receive only a warning. However, UA Little Rock Chancellor Christina Drale overruled the panel, upholding the termination. In her decision, Drale stated that Branch’s posts were disruptive to “the operation and effectiveness of the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, the Bowen School of Law, and UA Little Rock.”

Critics have pointed out the irony that Branch faced dismissal for controversial statements, while Kirk had built a career on making provocative remarks.
